How Long Should a Studio Wait Before Rebooting a Franchise? Streaming Over the course of the last two decades, we have seen franchises and characters go through more reboots than ever before. Something that the film industry is keen on doing is rebooting popular franchises for new audiences. Studios hope that bringing back beloved franchises from the past will cause a surge in nostalgia and drive people to the movie theaters. Movie franchises from the '80s and '90s consistently get the reboot treatment because of this. Batman alone has gone through six different live-action iterations and there will probably be more in the future. Over the course of the last two decades, however, we have seen franchises and characters go through more reboots than we have before. The first Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire came out in 2002 and his trilogy ended in 2007 with Spider-Man 3. Five years after Maguire's trilogy ended, The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield was released in 2012. His time as the web-slinging hero ended in 2014 with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after it was bombed by critics. Only two years later were we reintroduced to Spidey a third time in 2016 when Tom Holland's version of the character debuted in Marvel Studios' Captain America: Civil War. There were three different iterations of the same character and the same franchise in the span of only 14 years. That seems like too many reboots, right? Granted, each iteration of the Spider-Man franchise has garnered lifelong fans, but it has also been the subject of criticism for rebooting either too many times or too soon. The same criticisms apply to franchises such as James Bond or horror franchises such as Halloween. With as many fresh ideas that studios are able to churn out, there are probably double the amount of pitches to reboot an already-loved franchise. This begs the question; how long should studios wait before rebooting a franchise? There should be criteria for studios who want to re-imagine an original movie or franchise, and certainly for movies that have already been remade. Studios should probably wait a minimum of 20 years before re-starting a franchise again. Let's take a look at the reasons why they should wait: While some rebooted franchises are able to offer a new take on the original work, a lot of reboots fall victim to repeating the same storylines and tropes we have seen before. With Batman, we have seen how Bruce Wayne's parents die multiple times. It is an important part of his character's backstory, but we have seen their death so many times now that it is basically general knowledge at this point. It does not necessarily need to be included in every new version of the franchise because of this. The same can be said for Uncle Ben's death for Spider-Man. Since audiences have already seen his death more than once, it's probably one of the reasons that Marvel Studio's decided to just scrap the character altogether. Uncle Ben is a character that means something to Spider-Man, but he doesn't have to be included to tell a great Spider-Man story, as seen in Tom Holland's trilogy. This goes for franchises outside the superhero genre as well. The horror genre falls prey to this repetitiveness frequently. How many times have audiences watched Michael Myers relentlessly terrorize Haddonfield in pursuit of Laurie Strode? Or witnessed Leatherface hack someone up? Most of these reboots aren't received well by fans or critics because it offers nothing new to those franchises. If reboot after reboot is produced in relatively short periods of time, it is going to be nearly impossible to continue to come up with fresh ideas. Allowing New Generations to Experience a Reboot They Can Relate To Another downside to rebooting franchises too soon is that it doesn't leave enough room for new generations to become involved with the new story while appreciating the original story. If a franchise starts and is rebooted within the span of ten years, it is likely the same group of people watching both versions. There isn't anything wrong with that, but it doesn't allow for new fans to come in during the reboot and leave wanting to experience the original to appreciate the source material. No one else has ever played the iconic final girl Sidney Prescott other than Neve Campbell. She is what keeps every movie connected to one another, even as new characters and generations are introduced. When Paramount decided to give Scream the remake treatment 26 years after the first movie, they didn't go about it in the traditional way. They kept the same principal actors in their original roles instead of having them simply make a cameo. They also introduced an entirely new group of teenagers that weren't even born yet when the events of the original movie took place, but they kept those events canon in this new storyline. In doing so, they bridged the gap between generations and created a movie where both groups were working towards the same end goal. It was nostalgic for fans of the original and exciting for new fans to be part of this world while also having the story feel relatable to them. Waiting long periods of time between reboots adds to the anticipation of waiting for the next variation of a well-known franchise. Before he took over the task of directing the next installment of Star Wars movies, J.J. Abrams reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise. When the first movie of the rebooted trilogy came out in 2009, there were no Star Trek TV shows currently airing, and it had been decades since the original movies came out. He was able to create a remake that appealed to critics, audiences, and die-hard Star Trek fans by taking the time to get it right. If studios and filmmakers rush to remake movies and reboot franchises in order to take advantage of their current popularity, they will disappoint themselves and moviegoers. It takes time and dedication to craft something that has sentimental value as well as new ideas. Rebooting a popular franchise three years later is not going to allow the filmmakers to bring anything new to the franchise, and it also does not give audiences any time to truly miss and appreciate their favorite franchises. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is almost ready to open up Phase 5 of the MCU and take fans on a new dive into the dangers of the Quantum Realm. With the film being given the red carpet premiere treatment in Los Angeles on Monday, word has now been released about how many post-credit scenes the movie will have. Like many other MCU movies, it seems that Quantumania will deliver two stingers at the end of the movie, one mid-credits and one post-credits for those willing to stick it out through several minutes of cast and crew names. The first Marvel movie of 2023 is expected to be one of the biggest MCU releases of the last three years, which is quite curious considering the previous Ant-Man movies have been regarded as something of a breather among more dramatic installments of the franchise. This time around though, the stakes are higher, the multiverse is expanding, and Kang the Conqueror is ready to step up and make a claim on the Marvel universe. With the movie expected to have an impact on many upcoming MCU films and shows, the question is which upcoming movies the post credits scenes will actually link to. While Marvel have a tendency to include one mid-credit scene that teases something to come, and a final scene that usually either is a bit of a throw-away moment or ties up a loose story thread, the level of threat in Quantumania may not lend itself to a jokey second post-credits scene, but that is something many will only find out when they see the movie in theaters across its opening weekend. For many people, the devastating ending of Avengers: Infinity War, a film that essentially saw the villain win and the heroes defeated, was only beaten by the arrival of Avengers: Endgame a year later. While an Ant-Man movie doesn’t seem like it can compete in the same arena, Quantumania is being pitched as its own Endgame and the conclusion of the film is likely to set the scene for what is to come on the journey to Avengers: Secret Wars in 2026. While this kind of claim has been made before, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness failing to quite meet the lofty expectations of fans who wanted to see more multiverse, more madness and just more of everything. One of the greatest challenges of Phase 4, which itself was more of a reflective phase than a progressive one, was matching the expectations set by Avengers: Endgame that every movie was going to continue to be bigger and more sprawling than the last. This clearly is something that wasn’t sustainable, and Phase 4 managed to drag over-hyped fan theories down a few notches. Now Phase 5 has nowhere to hide and Marvel Studios has to start once again building up interest, hype and investment of fans before attempting to make Avengers: Secret Wars challenge the movies at the top of the highest grossing movies of all-time list.

Detective Pikachu, the first Pokémon live-action film, was a major success both commercially and critically. Its success at the box office was proof of its growing popularity. The video game adaptation made over $430 million at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing adaptations ever. The movie follows the story of aspiring Pokémon trainer Tim, played by Justice Smith, and the electric Pokémon investigator, Detective Pikachu, voiced by Ryan Reynolds. Tim and Pikachu team up to unravel the mystery of Tim's father's disappearance, leading them on a wild journey through the vibrant and dangerous world of Pokémon. Ryan Reynolds' performance as Detective Pikachu received a lot of praise from audiences and critics as well. And so on this note, fans have been wondering where the good detective's adventures will take him next. While the 2019 film was completely isolated to the confines of Ryme City, it's clear that an effort was made to still make it exist within the familiar Pokémon world. Detective Pikachu's (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) human companion, Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), was once an aspiring Pokémon trainer, an occupation that is firmly established to exist in the world of the film. With this in mind, it's not unreasonable to think that Detective Pikachu and Tim could venture into familiar territory and see the sights and faces that longtime fans of the video game franchise would be intimately accustomed to. In fact, setting Detective Pikachu 2 in a region already established in the games may work to the movie's benefit. It would be no surprise to anyone, not even someone who doesn't play Pokémon, to say that the main series of Pokémon games are immensely popular and lucrative. Even though plenty of common criticisms are thrown at them, especially in recent years, the games have remained a profit-churning juggernaut of the video game world. It would then stand to reason that having a direct connection to the games would allow a Detective Pikachu sequel to get a bigger piece of the proverbial pie. Of course, it would have to be done so as not to alienate viewers who perhaps are not familiar with the setting while also being blatant enough about the setting that it can satiate more hardcore fans. It's definitely a balancing act. However, if nothing else, making the setting a region from the games would allow for a background with immense personality without rehashing Ryme City. For example, if the film were set in the Johto region from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, the rural Japanese culture-inspired backdrop to the film would create an entirely different atmosphere to the previous more New York-inspired Ryme City. And in this hypothetical situation, setting the movie in the Johto region would cause fans of Gold/Silver/Crystal to flock to the theater.

With the same dry humor we’re used to from Nathan For You, but even greater pathos, The Rehearsal ends up packing a real punch. One scenario he produces is for a pregnant woman, where he simulates the experience of raising a child. As the season progresses, the overarching plot becomes more and more self-reflective and meta. It’s a fascinating career progression for Fielder, and shows off his incredible talent for writing. The Rehearsal is perfect viewing for fans of awkward comedy that has depth to it as well. The Other Two is about adult siblings Cary and Brooke, whose younger brother Chase achieves sudden pop stardom à la early Justin Bieber. The humor of the show is shocking and absurd, highlighting the alarming scenarios that child stars are placed in. Cary and Brooke are also both hungry to share the spotlight with their brother, and this leads to some desperate situations. The show’s supporting cast is made up of strong talent from the likes of Wanda Sykes, Richard Kind, and Molly Shannon. If you’re looking for something that pokes fun at Millennials, the internet, and fame in a way that manages not to be grating, this is the show for you. With a bizarre but interesting premise, The Leftovers questions what it would be like if 2% of the population simply disappeared one day. It’s not preoccupied with explaining what happened or why, the focus remains on how we would respond to an event like that. The answer, ostensibly, is not well. The cast includes heavyweights like Ann Dowd, Liv Tyler, Justin Theroux, and Christopher Eccleston, with no weak links even in minor roles. Explorations of family dynamics, religion, and depression are at the forefront of its themes, but these are not discussed in a clichéd and tired way as they so often are. The beauty of the show comes from its commitment to ambiguity and refusal to give clear answers. Co-creator Tom Perrotta told GQ that the unsolvable mystery at the heart of the show was important because he "wanted to make an apocalyptic story where all the actual 'apocalypse' is psychological." Lovecraft Country is a horror-drama series about a man, Atticus, played by Jonathan Majors, who travels across the United States in the 1950s in search of his missing father. He is also joined by Jurnee Smollett’s Letitia and Courtney B. Vance as his uncle George. The three of them encounter trouble from both the racist inhabitants of the towns they pass through, as well as Lovecraftian monsters. With Jordan Peele as one of the show’s producers, it’s not much of a surprise that it’s equal parts interesting and suspenseful. Lovecraft Country’s soundtrack uses the likes of Etta James and Nina Simone to build a strong sense of place and history that tops off the all-around excellent program. Set in San Francisco, Looking tells the story of a group of three close friends. They’re played by Jonathan Groff as Patrick, Frankie J. Alvarez as Agustín, and Murray Bartlett as Dom Basaluzzo. Despite premiering in 2014, Looking was HBO’s first series centering around gay men. Significant directors of the show include Andrew Haigh, director of Lean on Pete, whose naturalistic style shines through as the primary director, and Jamie Babbit who directed the legendary But I’m a Cheerleader. There is an authenticity to the world of these characters that lends a special feeling to the show. As is all too common among the underrated shows of HBO, it didn’t bring in the viewership that was expected and was canceled after its second season. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is a charming show about a woman, Precious, in Botswana, who opens up a detective agency after the death of her father. Precious and her assistant Grace have wonderful chemistry that makes you feel like you’re along for the ride with them. Richard Curtis, writer and director of legendary rom-coms like Love Actually, served as a producer and writer for the show, and this comes through in its endearing nature. If you needed any further incentive to start watching the pilot even features David Oyelowo and Idris Elba. With only seven episodes, it’s a quick and witty watch that will brighten up a rainy afternoon. Michaela Coel’s masterpiece limited series I May Destroy You follows her character Arabella as she grapples with being sexually assaulted. As creator and writer of the show, Coel expertly injects humor and intrigue into her narrative, which could, in other hands, have been handled poorly. The inclusion of comedy doesn’t feel distasteful — it just makes the characters feel more human. The cast is rounded out by Weruche Opia, Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Wright, and Marouane Zotti, who are all perfectly in keeping with the tone of the series. I May Destroy You is another show that while it received acclaim, deserved even more and for that reason must continue to be shouted about. My Brilliant Friend is a series adapting the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante. The story chronicles a lifelong on-and-off friendship between two women, Elena and Lila, from the perspective of Elena in her 80s. Beginning in a suburb of Naples in the 1940s, the show covers themes of corruption, poverty, abuse, and education. It’s fascinating to get a look into a very specific culture that is not often portrayed on screen for audiences outside of Italy. The show captures the energy and magic of its source material, it remains faithful to it but is not weighed down by it. Flight of the Conchords was created by James Bobin, Jermaine Clement, and Bret McKenzie. Clement and McKenzie also star as members of the central folk rock band who move to New York from New Zealand, chasing success. It’s suitably quirky for its late-2000s setting, and this adds to its charm. Taika Waititi fans might recognize the comedic style as Clement is a repeat collaborator with him on projects, like this and What We Do in the Shadows. In 2021, Clement revealed he had been trying to contact McKenzie about a reunion for the show (via Entertainment Weekly), so now is the perfect time to catch up before it potentially returns to our screens in the future.

Here is why the candid and yet fantasy movie about puberty is one of the best from Pixar. Turning Red has been a topic of conversation since it was released last year. The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. This is not director Domee Shi's first Academy Award nomination, even if Turning Red is her directorial debut on a feature-length film. Shi directed and wrote the animated short film Bao, which won an Academy Award. Nevertheless, her feature film is a milestone for Pixar and representation. Turning Red is the first Pixar movie solely directed by a woman and was co-written with playwright Julia Cho. There hasn't been anything quite like Turning Red: how it deals with taboo subjects (periods, puberty, etc.) that should be studied by future filmmakers. Turning Red tells the story of Meiling "Mei" Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang). At 13 years old, when everything seems very hard and unknown, Mei has to deal with a bigger challenge than feeling humiliated by her helicopter mother, Ming (voiced by Sandra Oh). All women in her family receive a spirit of a giant red panda – which they get transformed into when they have strong emotions. It's safe to say that Mei's journey won't be easy, but with a thoughtfully crafted story, Shi was able to convey a lot of subjects that are not usually a part of children's movies. Here is how she created great metaphors, especially for periods, and why the movie is a sensational feat. Right from the beginning of the movie, the theme of teenagehood and entering puberty is the focus. From the first crush on boys (celebrities and people they know) to talking about periods in a refreshing way, everything surrounds a difficult moment in a girl's life: when she is becoming a teenager. The unique group of main characters, that are engaging and extremely funny, are the way into this story that is much more grounded in reality even if it's strong fantasy elements. The group's struggles are extremely relatable, especially their awkwardness. Once Mei transforms into a red panda, which later on she discovers is a family blessing (or curse), she locks herself in the bathroom completely terrified. Her mom assumes she had her first period and brings tons of essentials to teach her daughter what to do: painkillers, different pads, and a hot water bottle. Domme Shi stated that she wanted to bring this to the screen because of how rare it is that the reality of a period is shown on television, especially in a way that is not filled with disgust and taboo. The director told Uproxx, "I mean, this movie is actually for 13-year-old Domee that was in a bathroom, horrified, thinking that she had crapped her pants. With puberty comes an enormous change in hormones and their levels that leads exactly to the strong emotions the panda is evoked by. It is a sensible and great metaphor for growing older and starting to have convictions and points of view of their own, as well. This is something Mei struggles with: the perfect image set by her mother of who she is and what she likes. Then comes one of the best metaphors of the movie: the family does a ceremony where they trap the spirit of the red panda. Every woman in Mei's family has done so. However, as the story progresses, Mei has become her own person, and a lot has to do with the spirit awakened in her. The idea of hearing that a girl should be calmer, not letting their (strong) emotions out, is something that unfortunately various women can relate to. A very special moment in the movie is when the protagonist's friends tell her that she has never been more fun and carefree before, and the character has to face a contradiction that is at her core: who is she? Pixas has been digging into something that has increased discussions, such as in Encanto: generational trauma. There is a focus on telling this problem, especially in immigrant families, as in the case of Turning Red. Mei and her mom's relationship is one of the most important ones, if not the most important, that she has. Even if her mom becomes overbearing, Mei takes a long time to be able to express her opinions and go against what Ming says. Later on in the movie, it becomes clear that Ming has problems with her mom, and those informed how she behaves with her daughter. A powerful moment in the movie is when all the women in the family (that are present) let their panda spirits out to help Ming. At the end of this fun coming-of-age, the characters all have stronger connections and allow each other to be who they truly are. While most praised the movie for its approach to these subjects, there were various parents (and some critics, such as Sean O’Connell on CinemaBlend), who were unhappy with the topic being discussed in a children's and the story overall. As said by the intern chief of adolescent medicine and pediatric and adolescent gynecology at Nemours Children’s Hospital Delaware, Dr. Robyn R. Miller, the problem teenage girls have is not about having too much information about menstruation but not having any. She said that a common thing is that girls start bleeding, and they immediately panic, thinking they are going to die. Let's hope that movies like Turning Red begin to deconstruct the taboo surrounding a natural occurrence, helping girls everywhere.

As Nick Fury recruited heroes for the Avengers Initiative, a mysterious killer disrupted his plans by wiping out all of Fury's candidates. The list of victims included Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk, all whom were no match for an invisible enemy. The killer was revealed to be Yellowjacket, not Darren Cross from the main MCU, but a variant of Hank Pym in an alternate universe. Hank was motivated by revenge after Hope van Dyne had been killed during a mission in Europe. He accused S.H.I.E.L.D. of using Janet's death to recruit Hope, blaming the organization and its director, Nick Fury, for Hope's death. Brown's performance as Cap in this version is an adequate one for the time period it came out in, as outside of Richard Donner's Superman, superhero movies were either nonexistent or strayed incredibly far from the source material. In terms of Marvel adaptations in the 1970s, it was certainly nowhere near the great superhero shows of the 20th century like The Incredible Hulk or The Amazing Spider-Man, but closer to the made-for-TV Doctor Strange movie. Brown reprised his role in a sequel released the same year titled Captain America II: Death Too Soon. A lot of what was said for Reb Brown can also be said about Matt Salinger's portrayal of Captain America in the 1990 version of the same name. Where Salinger edges out Brown, though, is in the fact that this movie is closer to the comic roots of Steve Rogers' Captain America although not by much more. This includes a much more accurate backstory, and the appearance of Cap's arch nemesis Red Skull. While the film is a slight improvement over the 1979 made-for-TV movie, 1990's Captain America was another early example alongside Howard the Duck, 1989's The Punisher, and 1994's Roger Corman Fantastic Four of filmmakers not quite getting how to adapt Marvel Comics character. This is encapsulated in this film when Captain America steals somebodies car and leaves them on the side of the road, as this is not the ideal hero that Marvel Comics fans know. Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduced us to not one, but two new Captain Americas. The first and the darker of the two is Wyatt Russell as John Walker who is given the mantle of Captain America by the United States government. This version of Captain America truly takes Cap to the darkest iteration fans have seen. Having auditioned for the first film, Captain America: The First Avenger, prior to the casting of Chris Evans, Russell always wondered what it would be like to play Cap, and he eventually got his opportunity. At the beginning of the Disney + series, it is stated that Steve Rogers is gone, where you might ask? Well, that is not really addressed and the last we saw of Steve, he was an old man passing down the mantle to his friend Sam Wilson. It is Sam, out of respect for Steve, who turns over Cap's shield to the United States government to be put on display for all to see. However, despite Sam's good intentions, the government has other plans in mind as they introduce Wyatt Russell's character, John Walker, as the new Captain America shield and all. Walker is a veteran suffering from PTSD and while working as the new Captain, Walker gets his hands on a vial of super-soldier serum and decides to ingest it to improve his fighting and strength. Walker, now juiced up with the serum, proceeds to beat a man to death with the famous shield following the death of his friends at the hands of a different person in what is one of the most horrific death scenes in the MCU. The image of Walker standing above the man he killed, holding a blood-drenched shield is certainly a dark moment in the franchise and one audience had a visceral reaction to. This is the event that leads to Walker being stripped of the Captain America moniker, but is later approached by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to be US Agent, who will play a major role in the upcoming Thunderbolts film. Russell's portrayal of John Walker is a complex one, a man who wants to do the right thing but whose own personal insecurities get in the way of him truly living up to the promise of being Captain America. The newest actor to dawn the Stars and Stripes is Anthony Mackie in the role of Sam Wilson. Fans have gotten to know and love Mackie's portrayal of Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, as he fought alongside Cap and the other Avengers dating back to 2014 in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sam made himself known as a worthy Captain America from his earliest days, volunteering at the VA hospital and helping other vets cope with their trauma. Like Steve Rogers, he is a good man who wants to do the right thing. Audiences got their first glimpse at Sam taking over Steve Rogers' mantle in the final episode of the Disney+ superhero series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. With a slick new suit and shield courtesy of his running mate Bucky Barnes and some Vibranium from Wakanda, the small sample size we get of Mackie as Captain America is enough to keep any fan excited as we move toward Captain America: New World Order. The Marvel Universe needs a Captain America, and Mackie's Sam Wilson has stepped up to the role and will be ready to lead a new team of Avengers against the threat of Kang the Conqueror in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Come on now, was there ever any doubt about who would end up in the number one spot? Chris Evans took on the role of Steve Rogers in the 2011 film, Captain America: The First Avenger, and subsequently starred in six additional movies while having cameos in two others. This means that Chris Evans appeared as Captain America in Marvel projects every year from 2011 to 2019. While Evans had great movies before Captain America, it is the role that has defined him for a generation. There is not one second throughout his time playing the character, that fans are not entirely convinced that Chris Evans simply isCaptain America, as he plays the part to perfection. Fans were able to take an eight-year journey with Chris Evans' Captain America, leading up to his farewell in Avengers: Endgame and the subsequent passing of the role to Anthony Mackie. Evans' depiction of Captain America made the character more beloved than he has ever been at any point in his entire history, known and appreciated the world over even in countries that may not have the highest opinions about the actual America. When the character called for comedy and a light-hearted touch, Evans delivered. When it called for seriousness, pain, and heartache, he made us feel what the Cap was feeling. The Monster Squad is a true cult classic of the 1980s. A campy comedy horror take on the famous monsters of Universal horrors, the 1987 movie was always potentially ripe for a sequel. However, the Fred Dekker directed movie remains as a one-off piece of cinema history, loved by those who grew up with it and unknown by many others. That could all have changed if a planned reboot by Leatherface screenwriter Seth Sherwood had gone ahead back in 2015, but as Sherwood revealed in a lengthy Twitter post he feels he can now reveal why it fell apart. Sherwood wrote: "Everything was based around a trio of friends. Sean, Horace, and Penny. I wanted the story to be about the fear of growing up, and use monsters as an allegory for that fear," Sherwood said. He continued, "When they were little, these three had a monster club, as the original. But now, they are getting old. Penny, the oldest, has lost interest and is has drifted to more mature things and friends. Horace is refusing to grow up, still loves toys, and is obsessed with monsters. Sean is caught in the middle. He's turning 13. He has a crush on Penny. He's becoming a teenager-- but he also still likes his playing monster club. He's torn. This is the heart of the story. Although Sherwood did not reveal which production company were planning on making The Monster Squad reboot, Platinum Dunes bought the film rights to the movie about five years prior to that. The Monster Squad’s original 1987 release was not a smash hit by any means. The almost Stephen King-esque story of a group of kids who have to face a host of classic monsters such as Dracula, The Wolfman and Frankenstein’s Monster in their own neighborhood, seems like it should have been a box office smash, but that was not the case. On release the film was a flop at the box office, but found a new audience through home video to become the much-loved classic it is today. With the movie having celebrated its 35th anniversary last year, it falls right in the “remake zone.” Whether this is something that will happen in the near future, especially with Universal ramping up their Monsters IP with movies like Renfield and the upcoming The Wolfman, it is hard to tell. The Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps writer-director Fred Dekker revealed this tragic bit of news recently regarding Monster Squad 2 and the possibility of getting a Monster Squad TV Show, saying this. "Shane Black and I have both been approached about adapting The Monster Squad for television. Was it my first choice? No. But I'm a big fan now of long-form television... And figuring out a way to take The Monster Squad and turn it into a long-form series was very exciting to me. But when we were approached, it was right after Stranger Things. I thought, well, let's make this for the people who fell in love when they were kids and say, 'Where is the squad as adults?' And Shane said to me, 'Well that's it.' I said, 'Yeah, it's a great idea.' And he goes, 'No, that's Stephen King's It. The first part of the book and the first movie is them as kids fighting monsters and the second movie is them as adults fighting monsters.'" So does this mean we will never see a sequel to The Monster Squad or a TV series based on the beloved kid-horror movie? Well, yeah, it looks that way according to Dekker, who goes on to say. "As a fan of the genre, there is nothing to me remotely interesting or new about "Monster Squad" as a movie or a TV show. Maybe in 10 years, maybe in 15 years. I mean I get Dekker saying that "everyone" is making similar stories these days, such as director Andy Muschietti's ongoing adaptation of Stephen King's IT to Netflix and The Duffer Brothers' Stranger Things, but still, I want more The Monster Squad, guys! I guess I can't speak for all horror fans out there, but I'm pretty sure that we would all be okay with a The Monster Squad 2 or a TV series nowadays. Father identified as suspect in murder-suicide of Utah family of 8 Michael Haight, 42, was described as a suspect in the deaths of his family that included his wife, their five children and his mother-in-law. A Utah man fatally shot his family of seven in a home Wednesday and then himself, authorities said. Michael Haight, 42, his wife; Tausha Haight, 40, and Tausha’s mother; 78-year-old Gail Earl, were discovered dead at the home, officials in Enoch City in southwestern Utah said. The couple’s five children, ages from 4 to 17, were also killed. The city called Michael Haight a suspect in a statement Thursday. Tausha Haight had filed a divorce petition in late December, officials at a media briefing said, stopping short of saying that was a factor in the deaths. “Investigators currently believe there are no suspects outstanding. Pope Benedict's funeral draws thousands to the Vatican Crowds of mourners poured into St. Peter’s Square for the Mass, which Pope Francis presided over. Thousands gathered at the Vatican on Thursday for the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, a stalwart of conservative values who shocked the Catholic church when he resigned a decade ago. WASHINGTON — The U.S. is headed for another era of divided government in the new year, as Republicans are poised to claim control of the House of Representatives on Jan. 3. Democrats will wield an expanded 51-seat Senate majority and control the presidency. As recent decades have shown, split control of Congress can get messy in an age of rising partisanship and political acrimony. And the dynamics on the two ends of Pennsylvania Avenue will set the backdrop for the 2024 presidential election. Here are four battles that loom on Capitol Hill this year. A House leadership fight Can Kevin McCarthy win — or hold on to — the speaker’s gavel? McCarthy, R-Calif., is facing a rebellion from a band of conservative flame-throwers vowing to deny him the speakership Tuesday when the House takes its first floor vote of the new Congress. If the rebels — led by Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Andy Biggs, R-Ariz. — make good on their word, they could send the speaker’s vote to multiple ballots for the first time in a century. McCarthy, who has led House Republicans in the minority for the past four years, won his party’s nomination for speaker in a closed-door, secret-ballot vote in November. McCarthy allies say the guerrilla tactics from conservatives will only delay the new House GOP majority from getting off to a strong start and launching investigations into the Biden administration — because the House can’t conduct any business until it has elected a speaker. Averting government shutdowns Even if the divided Congress leads to legislative gridlock, it will still have to keep the lights on. That will be no easy task: Republican-led Houses have sparked shutdowns under the last two Democratic presidents. Will President Joe Biden be an exception? McCarthy’s fierce objections to a bipartisan government funding bill just before the holidays show that the House has very different priorities from Biden and the Senate. He has described funding bills as a vehicle to force Democrats to swallow some conservative policy goals, like tightening border controls and cutting long-term retirement spending. "The baseline's too high. Spending's too much. We need to be cutting spending,” McCarthy told reporters after a meeting with Senate Republicans on Dec. 21. “This would be an opportunity for us to get some security on our border — we're missing out on that." Democratic leaders are in wait-and-see mode. “It’s too early to judge what’s going to happen in the House. There’s so much discombobulation and disunity on different sides of the Republican caucus,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters before the holiday recess. “I’ve always gotten along with Kevin McCarthy. We don’t agree on a whole lot of issues, but I try to work with anyone I can to get things done for the American people.” Preventing a catastrophic debt default One of the more daunting tasks for the new Congress will be to raise the country's debt ceiling in 2023 to make sure the U.S. can pay its bills and prevent a catastrophic default. Wall Street is already spooked about the prospect of brinkmanship, particularly after the last Democratic president who faced down a GOP House came within days of breaching the debt limit. Conservative lawmakers say a GOP House should block a debt limit increase without major policy changes to rein in spending. "We need fiscal restraint, and we should demand it. "Neither side of the aisle gives a s--- about reducing spending. And we should. ... You should not vote to raise the debt ceiling without structural change." Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., said the issue will "require a lot of robust debates within the caucus" before a strategy is set. "On certain key inflection points, like [the] debt ceiling, we're going to have to figure out a way forward," he said. "Everyone's going to have to realize that you can't get 100% of what you want." Schumer said the issue should be tackled “in a bipartisan way — and we will be working in the next Congress to get that done.” GOP investigations — and impeachment? After four years in the political wilderness, newly empowered House Republicans are salivating at the chance to investigate Biden and his administration. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who is likely to be the next chairman of the Oversight and Reform Committee, said Republicans plan to hit the ground running with investigations, beginning with immigration and Covid response. "Our first two hearings will probably be on the border ... and second will probably be Covid," Comer said in an interview. The House will "eventually" call in Dr. Anthony Fauci, who retired as the government's top infectious disease specialist at the end of last year, to testify, Comer said, adding that his committee wants to obtain new information about how the government handled Covid — which began during the Trump administration — before it puts him in the hot seat. The committee also plans a sweeping investigation of Biden's son Hunter Biden and the presidential family's business dealings, just one year before a likely Biden 2024 re-election bid. Comer told reporters he has no interest in targeting Biden's family members. "This is an investigation of Joe Biden, the president of the United States," he said. And with investigations could come calls for impeachment — not necessarily of Biden, but perhaps of others in his administration. Scientists are finally peering inside the sun's middle corona Scientists are one step closer to solving a key mystery about the sun. Researchers have discovered a complex, dynamic, web-like plasma structure in the sun's middle atmosphere, suggesting that the solar wind — the constant stream of charged particles that flows off the sun — forms within this web. The finding comes from rare observations of an elusive region of the sun and pave the way for a NASA mission due to launch next year. "We had no idea if it would work or what we would see," Dan Seaton, a solar physicist at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado and one of the study's authors, said in a statement. "The results were very exciting. For the first time, we have high-quality observations that completely unite our observations of the sun and the heliosphere as a single system." The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere is called the corona and is typically only visible to humans during total solar eclipses, when the moon blocks out most of the sun's light. The middle corona, which is about 650,000 miles (1 million kilometers) above the sun's surface, has been the least monitored region of the solar atmosphere, partly because there haven't been observations of the sun's corona at heights below 1.3 million miles (2 million km). In August 2021, researchers announced first-of-their-kind observations of the middle corona in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. Using advanced instruments with extended fields of view, the scientists found that solar wind structures originate in the middle corona. This provided the first comprehensive insight into the emergence of solar winds — a glimpse into understanding an important phenomenon that influences every planet in the solar system. Solar wind is one example of what scientists call space weather, a collection of ways that the sun and its outbursts can affect Earth. Space weather can destroy electronic equipment, weaken radio communication, add noise to cell phone reception and knock out power grids. However, scientists don't understand the exact mechanisms that eject solar winds and other space weather, making these events nearly impossible to forecast. Now, new observations coupled with data from additional space probes and computer models have revealed a complex plasma network in the middle corona. An international team of researchers analyzed data from a month-long observation campaign using the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) on NOAA's GOES-17 weather satellite. The satellite's extended field of view captured images of not only the center of the sun but also its sides, providing an unusual glimpse at this region's structure and evolution. "We had the rare opportunity to use an instrument in an unusual way to observe a region that has not really been explored," Seaton said in a second statement. "We didn't even know if it would work, but we knew if it did, we'd make important discoveries." Using this data, the team tracked a pair of coronal holes — patches of the sun that appear dark and mark where the sun's magnetic field is open to space and expelling material — as they rotated across the solar disk. When the coronal holes appeared at the sun's east and west edges, the researchers discovered the middle corona to be a highly structured coronal web called the "S-web." This complex web is made of magnetized plasma structures that continuously interact and reconnect. Es cierto que en 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' hay más personajes con cierto peso en la historia, pero eso no supone que estén bien desarrollados. Ahí ni siquiera el hecho de que Cameron no escriba en solitario el guion -aquí cuenta con la ayuda de Amanda Silver y Rick Jaffa, el mismo dúo detrás del libreto de 'El origen del planeta de los simios'- ha servido para que los protagonistas tengan gancho. Ahí la película sufre una alarmante falta de naturalidad e incluso destruyen una de las pocas virtudes de la primera entrega en este punto, ya que esa naturaleza guerrera de Neytiri brilla por su ausencia durante la mayor parte del relato para relegarla al rol de madre preocupada. Lógico por la historia planteada pero totalmente insatisfactorio en su ejecución. Eso es algo que se acaba trasladando a la propia historia, donde llega un momento en el que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' casi parece un remake encubierto de la primera entrega. Sí, se amplía el mundo de Pandora, tanto en términos sociales como de las criaturas que lo habitan, pero acaba sintiéndose demasiado similar a lo que ya vimos en su predecesora. Y al final todo acaba reducido a un inevitable enfrentamiento contra los humanos opresores, reincidiendo nuevamente en esa aparente contradicción en la que no deja de caer la saga, ya que por un lado es una celebración de la naturaleza y por otro una fantasía militar. Lo peor de todo en este punto es que 'Avatar 2' acaba sintiéndose como una aventura de transición para preparar la inevitable tercera entrega. Además, aquí no me vale la excusa de que se trata de un blockbuster y sigue existiendo la necesidad de hacer la historia lo más sencilla posible para no confundir al público. Este mismo año nos ha llegado 'Top Gun: Maverick', una película que ha demostrado que se puede tener un guion sencillito en cuanto a lo que propone pero en el que todo fluye en lugar de atascarse constantemente, que es lo que sucede con 'El sentido del agua'. Duración injustificada Avatar: El sentido del agua Avatar: El sentido del agua Online Avatar: El sentido del agua Gratis Avatar: El sentido del agua Espanol Avatar: El sentido del agua Peliculas Avatar: El sentido del agua HD Un poco consecuencia de lo anterior es el problema de que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' en ningún caso justifica tener que durar más de tres horas. Y es un grave problema, porque dentro de esos 190 minutos sí que se podría encontrar una emocionante aventura de 2 horas o algo menos. En eso pensé sobre todo durante el espectacular último acto de la película, en el cual Cameron vuelve a desplegar todo su arsenal para las escenas de acción, demostrando que no hay nadie como él para ello. La pega es que muchos espectadores van a llegar ya agotados a lo mejor de la función y probablemente no disfruten de ello tanto como deberían. Ahí es también donde Cameron busca que el impacto visual no se coma la parte más emocional, pero ciertas decisiones de guion previas -por ejemplo hay una explicación totalmente delirante para explicar por qué el clan Metkayina había evitado el conflicto hasta ahora- llevan a que se acabe sintiéndose más como una repetición pero a lo bestia de lo que ya vimos en el tramo final de la primera que como una experiencia realmente nueva. Además, tampoco ofrece tantos estímulos para irse por encima de las tres horas. Ahí también tenemos este año un ejemplo de película de duración similar -apenas tres minutos menos- que logra superarse a sí misma de forma constante y pensando siempre en el disfrute del espectador por encima del mensaje que busca transmitir. Se titula 'RRR'. El 3D ya no impresiona tanto Una cosa que Cameron hace de maravilla en 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' es todo lo referente al rodaje de escenas bajo el agua. Nadie se ha acercado ni remotamente al brillante trabajo que hace aquí en ese tipo de escenas, pero es que luego incluso algunas de estas secuencias brillan menos de lo deseable por sus decisiones en lo referente al 3D. Que 'Avatar' hizo historia con esa tecnología y la puso de moda es innegable, como también lo es que quizá sea aún la película que mejor la ha utilizado. Sin embargo, Cameron no podía limitarse a un más de lo mismo en ese punto y acabó dando con un curioso truco para no tener que sacrificar sus enormes aspiraciones. Ojalá lo hubiera hecho. El plan de Cameron consistía en utilizar la tecnología HFR para mejorar el 3D en algunas escenas y utilizar una velocidad de 48 fotogramas por segundo, lo cual le obligó a que "en cualquier parte de la escena que queramos a 24fps, simplemente duplicamos los fotogramas". Una solución genial sobre el papel, pero a la hora de la verdad es uno de los factores por los que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' luce peor que su predecesora en este aspecto. Con eso no quiero decir que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' no vaya a ser una película importante a la hora de introducir progresos técnicos en el séptimo arte, pero sí que el resultado es muy desigual. Hay momentos en los que resulta una experiencia totalmente inmersiva y te hace creer en la existencia de ese otro universo, pero en otros se aproxima peligrosamente a ese efecto telenovela de algunos televisores que tanto molesta a ciertos espectadores. Sé qué hay un sector del público para el que eso no resulta una molestia, pero yo me encuentro entre los grandes detractores de ello. Eso lleva a que haya situaciones que te expulsen completamente de lo que sucede en pantalla y doten a 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' de un feísmo visual inesperado. Ahí pudo tener algo que ver la calidad de la proyección a la que asistí yo, pues en ningún caso eran los cines ideales para ello, pero ni siquiera eso justifica esos extraños altibajos. Y en una película en la que prima tanto la experiencia, es un problema importante. En resumen Cameron llegaba a 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' con el insuperable aval de haber dirigido dos de las mejores secuelas de la historia del cine. Por desgracia, no podemos decir que aquí haya logrado el mismo hito. Sin ser una mala película, se queda por debajo de su predecesora y al mismo tiempo que deja con curiosidad sobre el futuro de Pandora siembra dudas sobre si realmente queremos seguir volviendo a ese planeta. Esperemos que se quede en un pequeño traspiés antes de poder desplegar todo su arsenal.
